1. Bin Vista disc 2. Reboot computer with operative system of your choice problem solved. It's not Vista... (and Vistas fine... esp if you have the proper amount of required RAM (3GB + ).... this however is not the thread for whining about Vista... More on lucy's problem since she's explained it so well... Running Windows XP Computer slows down when wanting to run programs ask human to select which user is wanted to be used to run the program. may not be a virus.. maybe something corrupted... re install windows?

Hmm you don't need to jump to reinstalling windows. First give it a thorough scan with AVG (it's free) and see if you find anything.
... bloody PCs = )

I also think its somehow linked to Adobe. When it all started up last week it was after I was online and needed to read a pdf on a website but a window said I couldnt- that my version wouldnt allow it and I needed to stop that one and get a new one. I followed links from the site (a govt one to get my student visa so it wasnt dodgy) to the Adobe site to supposedly get the necessary update. Unfortunately thats when the EPIC slow-down occured. It wont let me type more than a few letters at a time without a huge wait for the rest of the letters to appear, it takes at least 10 min to open a window, and thats not exaggerating. I restarted (which took about 45 min- literally) and it seemed to wor a bit better but after a couple hours was back to the old tricks. After a Windows update and several virus scans by both my anti-virus things (which found nothing) and a few days passed and it seemed to be getting back to normal.
However, I still needed a visa and I still couldnt read pdfs online and so I had to try and download the appropriate Adobe- and lo and behold the same thing has happened again. And I still cant read pdfs online. Even though I supposedly have Adobe Reader 9. WTF?!?

You could try un-installing all the Adobe stuff you have. It's not a magic solution (installation leave files littered everywhere) but it's a start.
Seriously Ben, why aren't you answering here? you're the über geek computer-savvy-person of the club.

Well, I uninstalled every Adobe feature that was on my computer... but now I cant reinstall it. When I went to the Adobe site and attempted it I kept getting the same Error message that "the installation is currupt!" and several numbers, then Firefox freezes up and I have to go to the Task Manager and End the Process. Great.
Also, there are lots of "Run As" windows that have been popping up for over a week asking me which user account I want to run the program with- Im not sure what program its referring to and I just keep closing them..
HELP! This is getting ridiculous!

Well I think it has fixed itself for now, and I didnt have to resort to such drastic measures as purging with fire and system restores! ...just a few hours searching through help forums and trial and error with different programs. But I could read an online pdf and it doesnt get overloaded when I type more than 3 letters at a time so its all good for now!
