Just incase anyone was interested, the AU (sorry YS) have decided that will be uniform in our representation of the university.... ie, black and gold for all.... hurrah!
here's the letter
Dear Clubs,
Firstly, I would like to apologise for the lack of communication with regards to what clubs are expected to do with regards to kit, and how they can do it. The YS Committee only voted on the issue earlier today, and it was felt that club presidents should be notified only after things were made concrete.
I can now happily say that a decision has been reached about having a uniform kit and logo across sports, and for the first time ever it looks like sport at York will be united under one strip. The changes will be brought in over a 1 year period, and clubs will be helped to make the change in the most considerate way possible within our means. The passed motion holds that all clubs will adopt black and gold kit where black and gold kit is possible (exists/is allowed in competition). The motion also holds that clubs may only have the University crest or the York Sport logo as a central breast emblem, and if the crest is chosen the York Sport logo must be located elsewhere on the kit (on the sleeve, for example). If a club is able to have black and gold kit they can have whatever colour and style merchandise they like, however if they are unable to have black and gold kit their merchandise should reflect the guidelines given.
If you are a club who does not currently have black and gold kit/merchandise, we would again like to reinforce the benefits of using ADM where possible. They are essentially a merchandise middleman who do bespoke kit as well as most major brands, and 7% of all the trade that goes through them comes back to us in kickback, helping fund sport at York. However, the system is all set up to work by going through Gill, the York Sport Admin Coordinator. If you haven't met Gill yet, she lives in the student activities office in the Student Centre. If you would like a catalogue, go to her office. A selection of the available kit is displayed online here.
If you would like to use a customised York Sport logo as the main emblem of your club get in contact with Sam Town, the YUSU graphic designer (design@yusu.org). He's a bit snowed under at present with work for the YUSU bar, but he can put together a few ideas of your logo that your committee can then decide on. Not only can the club name on the logo be changed, but background embellishment can be added (e.g. crossed blades or sticks). As a point of style, simple names such as 'Equestrian' or 'Octopush' seem to work better than 'Equestrian Club' or 'Octopush Club', but have a look and see what you think. If you'd rather use the crest as the main emblem it may be more suitable to have the basic York Sport logo elsewhere on your kit. The crest is officially not allowed for use on club kit, so says the University style guide. Please do not jeopardise its use by clubs and take care who you bring this up with.
Now comes the real work of facilitating the change. If you are unsure about how your club should go about adhering to the new branding please get in contact with your club liaison: this kind of thing is the reason that they have taken on this role. Several clubs are already pushing on with taking up the new colours and logo, which is great to hear, but please remember we are here to help if you need us. Finally, keep us informed! We are lacking a communications officer, so all of us need to make an effort to keep each other informed about what is going on. In one term sport at York has probably gone through more change than it has in the last 10 years, so keeping everyone up to date is a must.
This can't be stressed enough: we have started a process of invaluable development, giving sport at York the best chance it has ever had to not only survive what are likely to be a few lean years, but also modernise- coming out of them a far more coherent and effective entity. Keith Morris, BUCS Co-Chair of the Yorkshire Division, described York as a 'sleeping giant' of sport. We have the potential to dominate, and regardless of negativity, skepticism and other obstacles that stand in our way, we have a responsibility to the students of York to take the risks necessary to move sport at York up to the next level. It is high time we secured our future and made our presence felt.
Any problems, get in touch with your liaison, and I hope to see you at one of the charity events over the next couple of days.
Kind Regards,
Alex Lacy
